White Sage also known as 'Sacred Sage' is an ancient herb used in rituals and ceremonies over 100's of years and has been practised globally by many different cultures and civilisations, for its powerful cleansing and purifying qualities.
The Latin name for Sage is 'Salvia' coming from the verb 'Salvere' meaning 'to heal'
The first people to use White Sage in bundles for smudging were various Native American groups who would use it in sacred ceremonies. Many people believe it clears lingering energies but it also has many other spiritual meanings depending on which culture or group you ask.
However, many ceremonies and aspects of Native American culture (including Sage burning) were banned up until 1978. Due to this unjust suppression of Native Americans much of their culture has been lost and that which has survived has done so through the older members bravely and secretly teaching the future generations.
In contrast, Europeans found that burning Sage had value for its more practical benefits, for example disinfecting various areas and people due to it's potent antibacterial properties when burned.
Although each bundle is slightly different in size they measure approximately 4.5cm x 23cm (9")
